Rotate the engine manually through 2 complete revelutions and then re-checked if the IP pin, camlock slide right in, and the flywheel mark is dead on - you're going to be fine. I am not advocating that it is the right thing to do, but after you've:ģ. I did check the timing after with VCDS, but never had to make any adjustments on the cars where I didn't loosen those pulleys. If your timing was dead on before you did the belt install, and your static injectin pump timing was good, why would that change? Quite frankly, on the jobs I've done without messing with the camshaft pulley and injection pump pulley, VCDS wasn't even needed. If you wait to install the top roller and wait to install the tang on the tensioner, you have plenty of slack to slide the belt on evenly (With the Camshaft locked and the IP pinned). I DO pull the pulley because it is easier to install the belt, but for my first few timing belt jobs I did not loosen the IP pulley or the camshaft pulley. You should have trouble seeing the alignment tabs on the top of the tensioner as they should be almost behind the timing belt. I've got the correct tools but I do have a question about pullng the Camshaft Pulley. Recent posters have found it difficult to get the tab on the back of the tensioner positioned in the correct spot. I put everything back together and made sure the timing was good, started right up but I had a good amount of belt whine, ended up bringing it back in the garage and loosened up the tension pulley a hair and it went right away, seems like the tdi howto procedure was just too tight for whatever reason, it's humming like a bird now, I'll recheck the tension in a day or so after I make another tool to adjust the tension.īig thanks to the tdiclub community for all of the great information. My waterpump was totally shot, the plastic impeller was loose on the shaft! I used acetone and a small chimney brush to clean it all out, ended up breaking the stutter valve arm and did the hanger fix which is working great. I ended up pulling the entire intake off after I saw what a sorry state the guts were in. I changed it without pulling the cam pulley, I just didn't see the need at this point. Did some last minute fitting and then locked it down along with the pump using a tight fitting drill bit. Last minute change of plans, ended up needing to change the waterpump/TB and not having the tools to do it so I made them out of some steel I had around.
